HOW ENUGU-BASED COUPLE LURED, KILLED COMMERCIAL BUS DRIVER IN IMO

By Sampson Uhuegbu

A commercial bus driver who left Enugu State on a charter trip has been gruesomely murdered in Umuobom, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State, by the couple who hired his vehicle.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, after the driver was contracted to convey a man and his wife, identified as Precious Unoma, from Enugu to Ideato.

The trip, which initially appeared to be a legitimate charter business, turned deadly on arrival at the couple’s residence in Umuobom.

According to eyewitness accounts, the suspects, upon reaching their destination, lured the unsuspecting driver into their house under the pretext of helping them carry some luggage into the bus.

It was inside the house that the driver was allegedly attacked and killed. The couple thereafter attempted to take possession of his bus and flee.

Luck, however, ran out on them. Neighbours who heard a strange commotion from the compound raised alarm, attracting members of the local vigilante group and other residents.

The suspects were immediately apprehended while attempting to escape with the vehicle. Security operatives were later invited and took them into custody.

The bus belonging to the deceased driver has been recovered and is currently parked at the Ideato Divisional Police Headquarters.

The Imo State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but a senior police officer at Ideato, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the arrest and said investigation has commenced.

Meanwhile, police authorities have urged members of the public, particularly transport union leaders in Enugu, to help circulate information about the recovered bus to enable the family of the deceased driver come forward for identification.
