Ohanaeze GEC Constitutes Electoral Committee for FCT Chapter, Fixed Election for 24th October 2026

The Global Executive Council (GEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide on Saturday, 6 September 2026, held a crucial meeting with stakeholders of the Abuja (FCT) Chapter in Abuja, as part of ongoing efforts to promote peace, unity, reconciliation, and stability within the Chapter.

The delegation from the National Secretariat, Enugu, was led by the Deputy President General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi, who conveyed the goodwill and message of the President General, Senator Azuta Mbata. The President General urged members of the Abuja Chapter to embrace peace, unity, mutual understanding, and the collective interests of Ndigbo.

Prince Nwadinobi stated that the primary mandate of the delegation was to constitute an independent Electoral Committee to conduct a fresh general election for the FCT Chapter. He emphasised that the Committee must operate independently, remain free from external interference, and be committed to conducting a credible, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful election.

The election has been scheduled for 24 October 2026, while the Electoral Committee is expected to publish the election guidelines within two weeks.

The election is expected to provide a credible resolution to the longstanding factionalisation and internal challenges within the FCT Chapter of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

In addition, each of the six recognised groups is to nominate one representative to the Electoral Committee.

At the meeting, all the groups signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), committing themselves to abide by the agreed peace pact, the electoral process, and all resolutions reached at the meeting.

Speaking on behalf of the Electoral Committee, Amb. Eddy Onuoha expressed appreciation to the National delegation for its efforts and assured the gathering that the Committee would discharge its responsibilities diligently and impartially to deliver a credible election. He also solicited the continued support and cooperation of the General Executive Council (GEC).

Several prominent Igbo leaders in attendance commended the initiative and pledged their support for the peace and electoral process. Those present included Chief Ibe Nwosu (Igbo I), Prof. Charles Nwekeaku, Barr. Onwu O. Arua, Chief Andrew Ugwu, Odozi Nwodozi, Igwe Raymond Ugwuagbo, Henshaw Ogubuike, Esq., Mrs. Esther Ezeji, Chief Ifeanyi Nwaka, among others.
