Donated Items from US: Emeron Foundation founder, Nkwogu appeals for exemption of Import Duty

The Founder and President of Emeron Foundation USA/Nigeria, Dr. Emmanuel Nkwogu has appealed to the federal government to exempt the Import Duties on the shipped items donated by the foundation in USA to people with disabilities in the Nigerian communities.
In press release signed by the Founder, and made available to media, Dr. Nkwogu noted that the foundation is a non-governmental organization that has been helping the vulnerable members of various communities, and sensitizing them on the United Nations Sustainble Development Goals (SDGs).
“All these had been solely funded by founder. A large number of items, including a 2004 Toyota Sienna Van are also donated by Emeron Foundation USA Inc, and were shipped to Nigeria for the benefit of the vulnerable ones. None of these items is for sale. Even the Sienna Van is to help our Foundation in Nigeria for its day-to-day operations”, he said.
Dr. Nkwogu also disclosed, that he had applied to the Federal Ministries of Finance, Health, and office of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on SDGs, and others for the past Two months with the relevant documents for support over the Import Duty Exemption on the donated items that, according to him, are meant to alleviate sufferings of the vulnerable persons in the rural areas, particularly those living with Disabilities.
“Emeron Foundation is not able to pay the Import Duties demanded on these donated items They have accumulated large amount of demmurage. We are appealing to all relevant authorities to come to our aid to claim these items that are meant to help the poor”, he pleaded.
Dr. Nkwogu also alleged, that Customs is demanding Import Duty of Three Million and Nine Hundred Thousand Naira (N3,900,000.00) on the 2004 Toyota Sienna Van, not including demanded Import duties on other items.
