The Imo state Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced its readiness to formally launch the “Information not Disinformation” campaign in the state.
The Correspondents’ Chapel stated this in a statement co-signed by its newly elected Chairman, Chinonso Alozie of the Vanguard Newspapers and Secretary, Victor Nwachukwu, of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, after the first congress conducted by the new officials, in Owerri, last Thursday.
Alozie said the aim of the project was to engage, collaborate and partner with the Heads of security agencies and other security stakeholders in Imo, to use the right information to correct disinformation.
He further said that the project was in line with the core mandate of the journalism profession to inform and educate members of the society on several issues.
According to the statement; “Inline with our constitutional obligation to educate, inform and entertain the society, we are set to unveil, starting from this week, the “Information not Disinformation” campaign in Imo state.
“The journey begins with a sensitization visit to Heads of security agencies; the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide; traditional rulers; the legislature; Imo Council of Elders; Religious Leaders; Captains of Industry and Non Governmental Organisations among others.
“This sensitization visit and campaign will enable us create an informed society that can benefit from the power of information.”
“We strongly believe that with the proper use of the power of information, we can fight insecurity while building, collaborating and enhancing economic activities for the good of all.
“ As the fourth estate of the realm, it is our constitutional responsibility to engage all stakeholders at any given point in time,” he said.
