A Nigerian Nursing student in the Philippines, Miss Uche, has recounted her experience in that country saying she wonders if her calmness and niceness could be the reason some guys thinks they could misbehave towards her.
She wrote on her Facebook page, “Four weeks ago, on a Sunday afternoon, I went to the mall to get some things. After spending 40 minutes to an hour in the mall, I got my stuff ready to go home. While walking to the bus stop where I was supposed to catch a jeepney, an average-height guy rode towards me on his bike”.
He continued, “the first, I thought he was trying to park or wait for someone until he said hello. ‘Can I get five minutes of your time?’ he asked. I replied, ‘I hope there’s no problem.’ He nodded his head, stretched out his hands forward, and said, ‘Hi, my name is Jacob.’
I responded, ‘Hello, I’m Peace.’ He then asked, ‘Do you play any games because you have the height and stature?’ I said, ‘No, not yet.’ He replied, ‘Oh, okay. What country are you from?’ I answered, ‘I’m from Nigeria.’
He said, ‘Oh, nice! I’ve met some Nigerians before, and they’re really cool.’ I replied, ‘Oh, nice.’ I asked him, ‘You’re Filipino, I guess?’ He said, ‘I’m mixed. My dad is from Spain, and my mom is Filipino.’ I said, ‘Oh, okay!’ He then asked, ‘How old are you if you don’t mind?’ Well, in my mind, I thought, ‘I’m not the type that hides my age.’ So, I answered, ‘I’m 22, turning 23 in a few months.’
He said, ‘Nice, I’m 28.’ I replied, ‘Oh, nice!’ He then said, ‘If you don’t mind, do you have a boyfriend? I’m sorry for asking personal questions.’ I said, ‘Sorry, I can’t answer the question,’ even though I knew I wasn’t seeing anyone. He said, ‘Oh, sorry.’ I said, ‘No problem.’ He then asked, ‘Can we be friends on Messenger?’ I said, ‘Yes, no problem.’ He sent me a friend request, and I accepted it. One week after we met.
